This document provides an overview of the software components required to create a server-to-SAN (Storage Area Network) deployment solution by implementing the
HP ProLiant Essentials Rapid Deployment Pack(RDP). By providing automated server deployment and re-deployment scripts, Rapid Deployment Pack supports Automated System Provisioning, a key component of the Adaptive Infrastructure. Along with the version control features of Compaq Insight Manager 7, the Rapid Deployment Pack provides the IT manager a set of tools to automate repetitive labor-intensive tasks and more easily facilitate change management.
This software solution kit contains software components, drivers and utilities, in the RDP directory. These are designed to be copied to the RDP server and scripted for subsequent installation. The scripting instructions can be found in the HP ProLiant Integration Module for Altiris Express User Guide (supplied with Rapid Deployment Pack software).
The HP ProLiant Essentials Rapid Deployment Pack combines the GUI-based remote console deployment capability of the Altiris eXpress Deployment Solution with the power and flexibility of the SmartStart (TM) Scripting Toolkit, which is integrated with the Altiris product through the ProLiant Integration Module.
The Altiris eXpress Deployment Solution is a GUI-based deployment and software distribution tool that provides remote console capabilities for both imaging and scripting. Altiris has also developed enhancements within its base product for Compaq products, such as integration with Remote Insight Lights-Out Edition (RILOE) and Integrated Lights-Out (iLO), as well as the new ProLiant BL servers.
The ProLiant Integration Module contains sample deployment events, batch files, support software, and the SmartStart Scripting Toolkit to allow easy deployment of ProLIant servers without having to spend weeks developing an infrastructure. Deployment using the ALtiris eXpress Deployment Solution is made simple by encapsulating all the necessary steps for configuring and deploying ProLiant servers into easy-to-use deployment events that the user can simply drag and drop to deploy one or many servers.
Together, HP (Compaq) and Altiris have delivered powerful imaging and scripting features to provide the greatest amount of flexibility in server deployment.
The \Setups directory on the kit include the following
supported software components:
As you follow the instruction in the RDP documentation for creating scripted events for SAN component installation on your server, substitute the numbers
CP003937, CP003973, CP003939 for "XXXXXX" in the examples.
Note: | You do not need to copy any other components from this kit to your RDP server. |
Examples:
Here is the script sample from the RDP document.
REM Install Smart Component c:\temp\cpXXXXXX.exe /f /silent if errorlevel==3 set errorlevel=0 if errorlevel==2 set errorlevel=0 if errorlevel==1 set errorlevel=0 if errorlevel==0 set errorlevel=1
Here is the edited script for the hp Fibre Channel Utility for Windows 2000/2003.
REM Install Smart Component c:\temp\cp003739.exe /f /silent if errorlevel==3 set errorlevel=0 if errorlevel==2 set errorlevel=0 if errorlevel==1 set errorlevel=0 if errorlevel==0 set errorlevel=1
The Rapid Deployment Pack installable components in this kit are used in place of the normal driver installation and execution of the Fibre Channel Utility provided on the
kit. Some components which are installed via the Fibre Channel Utility should not be installed using RDP. These include storage array control software and documentation files. If you require that these components be installed on your server, you may use the
kit directly on your server or shared to your server from another computer.
The Rapid Deployment Pack installable sub-components on this kit, which are in the
Setups directory, are at the same revision level as the components that would be installed using the
kit procedure.
You should follow instructions available in the latest version of the SAN Design Guide (available from the HP website)...
http://www.compaq.com/products/storageworks/san/documentation.html
...for determining version compatibility for the various components in your SAN. The release notes which accompany this
kit may also contain this information.
The Rapid Deployment Pack installable components on this kit are designed for the Microsoft Windows 2000 operating system with SP2, SP3
or SP4 and Windows Server 2003. If you require support for Windows NT, then you MUST use the
kit method of software installation.
RDP allows the use of scripting or imaging deployment methods, or a combination of both, to deploy ProLiant servers. It is important to consider and understand the advantages and disadvantages of these methods. This section provides an overview of the deployment process and the capabilities of each deployment method.
Note: | The SAN components in this kit must be deployed via a scripted event process after the operating system software has been deployed on the server. |
Scripting is the use of batch files, utilities, and configuration files to write or program a list of commands that can be executed without user interaction. The configuration scripts may include the hardware, the operating system, applications, or other software settings.
The benefit of scripting is that it allows flexibility. You can use the same script on a number of different server platforms or models without making any changes. This allows for consistency and fewer numbers of configuration scripts that need to be maintained.
Once the operating system is installed, you can install applications to complete the server configuration. Most applications can be installed via a scripting process, either through native scripted installation methods, or through the use of a third-party scripted installation mechanism.
In general, the procedures for SAN connectivity cover the following basic steps:
Note: | The name LUN's and "virtual disks" may be used interchangeably in the documentation that you receive with your storage array. |
The SAN components in the this kit, when installed on the target server, will detect the presence of the appropriate FC HBA (Fibre Channel Host Bus Adapter) and install and connect accordingly. The default SAN configuration for the SAN is Multibus mode, which requires a subsequent installation of StorageWorks Secure Path software. If Transparent mode is required, it must be activated by running the FCUTIL program with the appropriate parameters in the script event or manually when logged onto the server. (See examples below.)
The FCUTIL program has the ability to run silently (via an RDP script) or manually using its GUI (graphical user interface) mode. Its funcions include:
![]() |
Buttons select and/or toggle options and are the same as command line equivalents. |
![]() |
Help information screen |
Command line arguments can be combined and can be included in scripts or executed manually from a command prompt.
Example: C:> C:\StorageWorks\FCUTIL\FCUTIL.EXE M +X +V
FCUTIL performs many of the same operations that are available via the
kit's Fibre Channel Utility software.
